Jeanne Britton, project leader and curator at the UofSC Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, will introduce the audience to the work of Italian illustrator Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) before guests don a virtual reality headset and step into Piranesi’s “imagined” city of Rome.

The Digital Piranesi team, consisting of 14 students and 17 faculty and advisory board members, is bringing the Irvin Department’s rare, 29-volume set of Piranesi’s complete works, Opere, into the modern era with digital and, under the direction of Jason Porter (School of Journalism and Mass Communication, virtual technology. Ten volumes of Opere will be on display at the event. UofSC is one of fewer than 10 institutions worldwide that holds a complete set of the Opere, published in 1837-9, after Piranesi’s death.

Piranesi was an innovative illustrator, printmaker, historian and art theorist who pushed the limits of his creativity, the printed page and the book itself. Through the course of his life, his multi-plate engravings of views of Rome, including maps, buildings, crypts and prisons, evolved to became elaborate foldouts in bound volumes of books, complete with references in maps and indexes that directed readers through a labyrinth of unnumbered pages between different publications — a body of work well suited to web-based and digital technology.

Parking:

The Bull St garage has some guest spaces. The guest entrance is the last one when you’re coming from Blossom, at the top of the hill. There are also metered spaces along Blossom close to the rear of the library. To get to the Hollings Special Collection Addition, enter through Thomas Cooper, and walk all the way to the back. Uber and carpooling are encouraged.

Lunch will be provided as a box lunch at the end of the program that you can take back to your office or enjoy on UofSC’s campus.
