Designed by LS3P in Columbia, SC in conjugation with design-build partner M.B. Kahn, for Richland School District Two, the Richland Two Institute of Innovation is a place where students, parents, teachers, and academic support personnel can come together, and serves as an interactive hub offering resources to the entire community. The vision of the center as a multigenerational “fishbowl of learning” creates educational spaces which are visible and active to encourage engagement and collaboration. The building features student learning labs, a community information center, a flexible professional development center, and academic support offices. Flexible spaces accommodate multiple teaching methods and group sizes with break-out areas, outdoor learning environments, and movable wall systems. The center can seat 800 people for workforce development classes or professional workshops. The facility offers a catering kitchen and an open-area restaurant, which spills onto an outdoor patio.
The plan is anchored by a large dividing wall, deep enough to house storage and other support functions, which defines active spaces and quiet learning areas. Intersections create areas for interaction and collaboration. A clerestory in the entry brings natural light into the building, washing the dividing wall with light. A future lateral circulation spine will expand the center for future learning partners. The façade invites students into this engaging work environment with a human-scale combination of masonry materials, abundant glazing, various sun shading devices, and metal panels for the more industrial areas.
