Chung is host of the new, four-part public television series Cool Spaces! The Best New Architecture, which premieres in the United States in June. In the show, he profiles buildings and spaces across the U.S. that have been created by architects and others who pushed the boundaries of design, materials and process. As part of his presentation in Columbia, Chung will preview clips from the series, which will premiere on ETVHD on Sunday, June 8 at 5 pm.
Before founding his own Boston-based studio, Chung worked in the offices of Richard Meier and Partners, and also with Philippe Starck. He received his architecture degree from Harvard and has taught at many schools including Syracuse, Cornell and Yale. Chung is also a sought-after guest expert and has appeared on HGTV, DIY, Travel Channel and Showtime.
With Cool Spaces!, Chung takes viewers inside design as never before. From napkin sketches to study models, Chung leads design buffs behind the scenes and into the architect’s mind, exploring the design process before the first wall is built.
The May 20 meeting, which is sponsored by Corporate Concepts and Knoll, will be held at the Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main Street in Downtown Columbia. Attendance is free for members of the Columbia Design League and AIA. Nonmembers may attend for $10 each and students with a valid school ID can attend for $5.
Elizabeth Nkuo Johnson, president of the Columbia Design League, is pleased to close the educational season with such an inspiring presentation. “One of the greatest benefits of design is its ability to push us beyond comfortable, conventional boundaries,” she said. “To get an intimate preview of a modern architecture show from someone as widely regarded as Stephen is a gift for anyone who is inspired by design.”
John Powell, president of AIA Columbia, is happy to bring the work of AIA’s national body home to Columbia. “This program and others like it are so beneficial to our profession,” he said. “It brings our passion for transformative design and construction to a much broader audience and shares how we seek to not just build, but to reimagine our city and region.”
