AIA Greater Columbia announces Design Award Winners!

COLUMBIA, SC – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Greater Columbia Section held their biennial design awards gala on November 15, 2012 at IT-ology .  Submissions were judged by an independent jury, selected by the AIA Greater Columbia Board of Directors, and awards presented to AIA Member Firms and Architects for projects which highlighted exceptional design.

The 2012 Jury was chaired by nationally recognized architect, Frank Harmon, FAIA, of Frank Harmon Architect.  The other jurors included:

Philip Szostak, FAIA of Szostak Design
Jeffery S Lee, FAIA of Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee
David Hill, Assistant Professor of Architecture, Graduate Director of Architecture, NC State University

This year, there were 6 awards presented, out of a field of 28 project submissions.  Two Honor Awards and Four Merit Awards were presented to the following projects and design teams:

Honor Award:
Muller Road Middle School
Architectural Firm: Quackenbush Architects + Planners, Architect of Record; Perkins + Will, Design Architect
Owner: Richland School District Two
General Contractor: Le Chase Construction

Honor Award:

Florence Field Maintenance Shop Phase I
Architectural Firm: Studio 2LR, Inc.
Owner: South Carolina National Guard
General Contractor: FBi Construction

Merit Award:
James E. Clyburn Research Center
Architectural Firm: Stevens & Wilkinson of SC, Inc. (in association with Goody Clancy & Associates, Inc.)
Owner: Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina
General Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC

Merit Award:

University of South Carolina Horizon I Research Facility
Architectural Firm: Watson Tate Savory
Owner: The University of South Carolina
Construction Manager at Risk: Barton Mallow
