USC’s South Campus: Last Look at Modernism Walking Tour

USC

USC’s History of American Architecture class would like invite you on a walking tour of the university’s south campus as seen from the Pedestrian Mall. This part of campus is slated for redevelopment so time is running out to take-in and appreciate some of the iconic buildings that defined the university’s tradition of modernism from the middle of the 20th century until now. The tour will start at 12:30 on Friday April 29th at the South Energy Facility on the corner of Whaley and Marion Streets. Parking is available in the Bates House Dormitory parking lot without a pass during the tour times. If you would like to join us please send an RSVP to Dr. Lydia Brandt at brandtlm@mailbox.sc.edu. We hope you can be a part of this experience before it is gone for good.

KIDS IN ARCHITECTURE DAY

YMCA

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Greater Columbia Section would like to invite all interested members to volunteer in this year’s Kids in Architecture Day. This event is sponsored by the AIA Greater Columbia Section with the Downtown YMCA.

 Saturday, April 30th @ 10am – 2pm

Downtown YMCA, 1420 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC 29201

Please RSVP your volunteer hours to cbrandt@jcsarchitects.com today!

This year’s Kids in Architecture Day will allow students to experience the architect’s collaborative design process. This program is designed to:

  • Introduce students to the process of architectural design
  • Explore the relationship between architectural design and art
  • Create an awareness of the artistic and built environment
  • Enhance communication skills

These program goals will be achieved through the design and construction of a Rube Goldberg machine. In this activity, students will work together and learn that there is more than one creative solution to any problem. Through the successful design of their machines, students will discover that the beauty in any design can be found in how it accomplishes its goal. After the students complete their projects, we will tour the museum’s collection of art and evaluate the unique ways in which various artists accomplish their diverse design goals.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 30th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Downtown YMCA. The exercises will be facilitated by architects from around the Columbia area. All materials will be provided by the AIA Columbia, a pizza lunch will be included and the event is completely free. Space, however, is limited.
