NEED IDP CORE HOURS?

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO EARN LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE HOURS!

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Greater Columbia Section would like to invite all interested members to volunteer in this year’s Kids in Architecture Day. This event is sponsored by the AIA Greater Columbia Section with the EdVenture Children’s Museum.

AIAGC’s Annual Kids in Architecture Day

Saturday, April 18th 10:00am – 2:00pm

@ EdVenture Children’s Museum
211 Gervais St.
Columbia, SC 29201

Please RSVP your volunteer hours to Ashley Colquhoun today!

This year’s Kids in Architecture Day will allow students to experience the architect’s collaborative design process. This program is designed to:

  • Introduce students to the process of architectural design
    • Explore the relationship between architectural design and art
    • Create an awareness of the artistic and built environment
    • Enhance communication skills

These program goals will be achieved through the design and construction of a Rube Goldberg machine. In this activity, students will work together and learn that there is more than one creative solution to any problem. Through the successful design of their machines, students will discover that the beauty in any design can be found in how it accomplishes its goal. After the students complete their projects, we will tour the museum’s collection of art and evaluate the unique ways in which various artists accomplish their diverse design goals.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 18th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the EdVenture Children’s Museum. The exercises will be facilitated by architects from around the Columbia area. All materials will be provided by the Museum of Art, a pizza lunch will be included and the event is completely free. Space, however, is limited.

Come join us for a presentation by the Clemson University Solar Decathlon team as they discuss their design and tell us how we can be involved!

“The Solar Decathlon is a competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The competition challenges 20 colleges and universities to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and attractive. The houses will be open for visitation in Irvine, California, October 8-11 and October 15-18, 2015.

Clemson University’s Solar Decathlon project brings together an active team of students and faculty from across the university to collaborate on the design, construction and promotion of a prototypical, three-bedroom, 1,000 sq. ft., low-environmental-impact, net-zero, solar house that is cost-effective in today’s market and comfortable under South Carolina’s climate. We are focused on stitching together innovative building methods, Southern personality and local products into a home for a Southern family.”
