Membership Event: AIA Greater Columbia | Design Scholarship Program

About the 2011 Design Scholarship Program

Greater Columbia AIA will be sponsoring a design scholarship for second year design students from the Clemson School of Architecture. This program was developed to recognize individual project achievements of the second-year architecture students. The goal of this program is to promote a meaningful connection between the professional architectural community in the greater Columbia area and the architectural education community at Clemson University.

This year, the site for the design project is located in Columbia and is focused on a segment of the former Seaboard Air Line rail bed, stretching from the intersection of Lady and Lincoln to Arsenal Hill. Over the course of the spring 2011 semester, the students will develop ideas and concepts to transform the abandoned rail line. Later this spring, final projects including models and drawings will be judged by a jury composed of AIA Greater Columbia members. A  select number of students will be recognized and chosen to receive scholarship funds.

Upcoming Membership Event

Please join us at the Arsenal Hill Center (1800 Lincoln St., Columbia, SC) on Friday, February 18 at 12:30pm, as the second year Clemson architecture students will be in town to visit the historic Seaboard Air Line rail site in Columbia. This event will begin with a lunch presentation (approximately 1 hour) to introduce the project and meet the students. The presentation will be followed by a walking tour of the project site. Please note that the walking tour is optional to AIA members. Lunch/presentation is $5 and the optional walking tour is absolutely free! Professional Ethics in Design and Building Seminar

Presented by The Robert J. Rutland Institute for Ethics & The South Carolina Board of Architectural Examiners, the aim of the Professional Ethics in Design and building seminar is to enhance practical understanding of relevant state law and, in particular, ethical principles relevant to architectural practice.  The approach is interactive and user-friendly.  We use case studies (a) to elicit ethical principles and (b) as occasions for practice in applying them.  We explain how these ethical principles figure in what we call a “toolbox approach” to ethical decision-making and stress the need to approach ethical issues in a systematic, reflective and responsible way.  Participants can earn 6 AIA continuing education units if they complete the workshop.  Learning units qualify as AIA/CES LU (HSW).
