Register now for the AIA Columbia June Monthly Membership Meeting & Tour: Close-Hipp Speech and Hearing Renovation Wednesday, June 26 12:00pm – 1:00pm
USC captured space within an existing on-campus building
to create a dynamic and inviting space for the Speech and Hearing Research
Center’s academic and research functions. The overall vision is creation
of distinct zones within the larger programmed area, with each zone
contributing the well-being of its specific end-users. To support
programmatic functions, the renovation includes new HVAC, electrical, fire
alarm and fire suppression systems, new LED lighting and ADA-compliant
toilets. In the Hipp Wing, 16,955 SF will serve clinical and research
functions, with testing, treatment and observation rooms, research labs and
faculty offices. In the Close Wing, 6,392 SF is student-oriented,
featuring computer labs, workroom, conference rooms and collaboration
spaces. In blending the multiple functions within the space, designers
focused on creating a healing environment which is conducive to collaboration
and learning. The clinical and research areas providing a soothing
environment, calming for patients and focused for researchers. In
student-oriented spaces, the aesthetic is more design-forward, interactive and
engaging, with a variety of environments supporting learning, collaboration,
creation and renewal. USC twice increased Pond’s scope of services.
